After posting, I see that the New York Times online update of today’s issue (2008-8-14) has an article by Laura M. Holson and Miguel Helft, “Smartphone is expected via Google,” on a T-Mobile phone by Taiwan’s HTC using Google’s Android platform that will be out sometime in the fall as the first of the Android phones. Similar to my point here, they see openness of the platform as a basis of competition.
